Letters to the Editor
We feel that "Letters to the Editor" in local and/or national publications is one of many excellent ways of getting the Progressive Democratic Message to the people. And it's an important part of rebutting the often inaccurate and misleading half-truths of the opposition.
The following are some of our most recent examples:

The sunshine feels great!
The League of Women Voters of Texas congratulates The Dallas Morning News for its substantial and significant contributions to the breakthrough of having votes be recorded by representatives' names in the Texas Legislature. Texas voters can amend our state constitution Nov. 6 in large part because of the leadership and persistence of The News. The consistent stream of editorials calling on the legislature to "Let the Sun Shine," a collection of some 200 organizations' signatures on a resolution and publication of those lawmakers in support and opposition was what got the attention of those who were not enthusiastic about this issue. This is community journalism at its best.
The League looks forward to continuing efforts to increase transparency and accountability in our government.

If they would just read it....
Texas legislators put "In God We Trust" above the rostrums in both houses, "under God" into the state pledge, allowed Bible to be taught in high schools and lifted restrictions on religious expression in schools.
But they killed an electric bill that included discounts to the poor and would prohibit cutting off service to those with critical health problems.
Seems like they want to use God and Bible but are not willing to put into practice what they say, especially if it costs money.

Dems Owe Bush Supporters
Re: "A Shift to the Left – Decreasing support for traditional social values and rising concerns about global engagement set a favorable landscape for Democrats, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center," April 29 Points.
I want to thank all those hardcore Bush Republicans for their recruitment efforts in support of the Democratic Party. Mr. Bush's presidency has led to the largest percentage difference in favor of Democrats since Tricky Dick.
Bush supporters, we couldn't have done this without you.

The GOP's Need to Suppress the Vote
Re: "House OKs voter ID bill," Tuesday news story, and "Unimpeded Polls - GOP effort reeks of minority voter suppression," Wednesday Editorials.
I was very disappointed that this bill requiring a government-issued photo ID to vote passed the Texas House.
The people least likely to own such an ID are the poor and elderly. This burden is similar to the poll tax previously used to prevent African-Americans from voting. Rep. Betty Brown, R-Terrell, said her proposal was designed to keep illegal aliens and others not qualified from voting, but supporters presented not one example of attempted voter fraud.
Recently prosecuted voter fraud cases have been proven to be a waste of taxpayer dollars. Does anyone know of an illegal alien attempting to vote?
The voting went along partisan lines. Why? Because the Republicans' plan for victory requires them to suppress voter turnout.
